Can You Crack This? The Forgotten Dutch Creation Which Forged our Contemporary World
There are numerous candidates to claim the designation as “planet’s most significant invention.” The circular axle. The printing press. The steam engine.
According to a new book, however, that honor belongs to a mechanised timber mill conceived by Dutch inventor Cornelis Corneliszoon during 1593.
“Before mechanised sawing, constructing a modest trading ship necessitated approximately 10 sawyers working over three months,” writes the author. “Using wind-powered sawmills, an identical quantity of processed timber could be manufactured in less than seven days.”
Owing to their rapid mechanical saw, which converted timber to planks using virtually no human effort, the Dutch were able to build ships more quickly compared to anyone else, which sparked one hundred years of Netherlands naval, economic as well as artistic supremacy across the continent and the globe.
The Original Genuine Manufacturing Machine
Corneliszoon’s lumber mill, contends Dávila, was “mankind’s initial true factory apparatus.” A windmill rotated a gear. One component converted its circular motion into vertical motion to power the saw. A separate mechanism changed that same spinning movement into a lateral movement advancing the timber toward the blade. A ratchet system shifted the log ahead one precise increment per cycle.
“Every component seemed modest by itself. Corneliszoon’s brilliance was to integrate them so the machine operated in a precisely synchronized sequence, sawing on every descending motion while advancing with each upward stroke. It was a remarkably clever use of fundamental parts.”
