Viral video clips seemed to capture Jones flashing his middle finger at Jets fans, but Jones maintains he was actually signaling approval to Dallas supporters present at the game as his team secured a 37-22 victory.
“It was unfortunate. It was essentially an exchange with Cowboys supporters out in front of us,” Jones explained during a Tuesday interview. “There was a large group of Cowboys fans—not New York fans, our fans. The entire stadium was filled with enthusiasm for the Dallas team.”
He further clarified that the gesture was completely unintentional, occurring amid the elation following the team’s last score. “I just put up the wrong finger,” he remarked. “It was accidentally performed. This is sincere. Should you call it unplanned, you can. However, it got resolved pretty quick.”
League Precedent for Proprietor Penalties
This incident isn’t the first time an NFL owner has been fined for inappropriate behavior. Previous cases involve:
- Carolina Panthers proprietor Tepper was penalized $300K for tossing a beverage at fans in early 2024.
