Global Renewable Energy Production Exceeds Fossil Fuel for the First Time
In a historic achievement, global solar and wind farms have generated greater power than coal-fired stations in an unprecedented shift in 2025, signaling a pivotal moment for the global power system.
Clean Energy Outpace Electricity Demand
An in-depth study found that over the first six months of 2025, clean power outpaced the world’s growing demand for power, causing a modest drop in fossil fuel use.
Globally produced almost a third more solar power in the first half of the period compared with the equivalent timeframe in 2024, meeting over four-fifths of the worldwide rise in power needs. Wind energy grew by approximately 7%, allowing clean sources to replace traditional energy for the first time.
“Solar and wind have expanded sufficiently rapidly to meet the global increasing demand for power,” stated an expert electricity analyst. “This marks the beginning of a shift where clean power is matching rising needs.”
Regional Impacts and Contrasts
India and China were primarily responsible for the surge in renewables, according to the analysis, unlike the United States and European Union, which depended more on coal and gas.
- China added greater clean power generation than the global total together, leading to a two percent decline in its consumption of traditional energy during the initial six months of the year.
- The South Asian nation grew its clean power by over triple its power needs – which was significantly weaker in 2025 – causing its coal and gas use to fall by 3.1% and thirty-four percent each.
By contrast, demand for power in the United States outpaced its expanding renewables sector, causing a seventeen percent rise in coal generation in the first half of the year.
Across Europe, power needs exhibited limited increase relative to the initial six months of last year, but a climate-induced decline in hydro and wind energy implied that even rapidly growing solar power could not prevent gas and coal generation increasing by 14% and 1.1% each.
Future Expansion and Trends
A separate report indicated that worldwide clean energy may more than double by the end of the decade, with 80% of new clean energy power expected to come from solar energy.
The expansion in global renewable installations in the near future will be dominated by photovoltaic systems – but with hydropower, wind, bioenergy and geothermal each playing a part, too,” remarked a leading energy authority.
The analysis highlighted that China would remain the world’s biggest expanding sector for clean energy, with The Republic of India arising as the next biggest throughout the ten-year period.
“In addition to expansion across established markets, solar is set to grow rapidly in nations such as Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and multiple Southeast Asian states,” the expert noted.
