The buzz about the recent awards show was significant, particularly after presenter Geoff Keighley posted an enigmatic image of a strange statue. The secret is finally answered. Larian Studios is developing a completely new Divinity game.
Announced as Divinity, the game was showcased with a daring trailer featuring intense imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the very opening of infernal gates.
Not the Expected Sequel
For those expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. Larian warned that a direct sequel to its beloved RPGs is not currently in development.
However, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a continuation of the core franchise. This choice of words implies that the team is likely building a more action-oriented experience rather than another tactical title. Currently, this is speculation, as only a teaser video is available.
What Makes Divinity Special
The Divinity series is widely praised and it's fair to claim it pioneered the recent resurgence of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are known for rich lore, choice-driven narratives, and flexible progression—traits that later reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its setting is familiar fare, what makes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust granted to the player.
While numerous modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is brimming with specialized paths that are viable if you're playing as a specific type of character with a specific history of choices.
The series is also notoriously flexible, allowing players to improvise in narrative and gameplay. Virtually all objectives can be solved in a variety of manners, sometimes in surprising fashion.
- You might find an answer because you recalled something a dog told you.
- Or, you could defeat a foe by using the world itself in a inventive way.
The Journey Continues
It is these creative systems that allow people to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games in history. Now, players can get ready for a new entry in this esteemed franchise.
