TikTok Grants Users Control to Decrease AI-Generated Content in Timelines

Users will soon have a new feature that allows them to reduce the volume of AI-made content appearing in their timelines. This initiative comes as the service revealed that it presently contains in excess of 1 billion AI-generated clips.

Pilot Phase and Launch

This change is undergoing trials over the following weeks before a widespread launch. This advancement coincides with a surge in content created by AI, spurred by emerging AI video creators.

The Broader AI Trend

Recent reports that almost one in 10 of the most rapidly expanding content creators on another major platform primarily display content made by AI. A large amount of this material is deemed low-quality AI content, a term for inferior, mass-produced content that is typically illogical or dreamlike.

Based on user feedback that a lot of users appreciate content produced via AI tools, from computer-generated images to science explainers, and we aim to offer the community the power to adjust the amount of that, depending on their own likes,” said a platform representative.

Volume and Proportions

The platform disclosed that there are now 1.3 billion videos on its service tagged as made with AI. In total, over 100 million pieces of content are submitted to the service every day, making AI-generated material a limited portion of its complete catalog.

User Control Features

Users will be in a position to limit or boost the level of AI-generated videos they watch by accessing the “manage topic” setting in the platform and selecting AI-made media. Further subjects that can already be controlled under the tool include politics, fashion, cosmetics, and movement.

Content Labeling and Policies

TikTok’s guidelines mandate users to tag lifelike artificially created content, and it prohibits malicious deepfakes of public figures or crisis events. Any authentic-looking AI video that is without a tag can be removed under its terms of service.

Furthermore, the platform will henceforth apply an artificially created tag to content made using its own AI tools, or flagged by an industry-wide initiative for recognizing content made by AI. This step is aimed to deter users from trying to bypass the tagging system.

Educational Initiatives

The platform is also establishing a $2 million AI literacy fund for professionals and groups to develop learning resources about responsible artificial intelligence. This project will assist charitable organizations focused on educating coding and technology.

Platform Protection

The platform has defended its moderation strategy, amid debate over plans to lay off a large number of content moderators in the United Kingdom. It is planning to cut a significant number of roles in its user protection division in its British office, with worker representatives and digital protection specialists expressing worry that people are being substituted by automated systems.

A senior executive stated that human moderation would remain essential, but automated tools can shield workers by removing the most distressing content before it is viewed by people. The company stated a 76% decrease in shocking and graphic content reviewed by human moderators over the past year due to intervention by its AI tools.

We believe it is crucial to combine staff and AI to maintain a secure environment,” the official commented. “We’ll have staff as integral to the approach, but we further consider it’s extremely critical to reduce exposure to dangerous material as quickly as possible, which is where a lot of the machine support is really helping us operate efficiently.”
