Around fifty cars have been smeared with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the German city of Hanau near Frankfurt, police confirm police.
Cars, building surfaces and postal boxes were defaced, occasionally with Nazi symbols, they stated in a release.
Law enforcement say they were alerted in the late hours on Wednesday evening, when a resident noticed that a automobile in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish-hued fluid.
The liquid had been drawn in the pattern of a Nazi symbol, they reported.
Officers then found numerous other marked vehicles and building exteriors in the adjacent neighborhood.
Nazi symbols are prohibited in Germany under regulations outlawing the public exhibition of Nazi-era symbols.
Police report initial examinations suggest the substance was most likely human blood.
"There is still no lead as to where it came from; authorities are currently not cognizant of any physical harm in relation with the event," they added.
Municipal representatives announced they were working "to resolve the incident" and have requested to the public for details.
An important political figure commented the incident rendered him speechless and needed to be solved rapidly.
"This act affects the center of Hanau and revives the pain of the extremist terrorist attack half a decade ago," he posted on online, recalling the murder of nine victims by a assailant targeting residents of foreign heritage in five years prior.
